Kuwait- Southwest Japan's volcano appears to erupt

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO, March 1 (KUNA) -- A volcano in southwestern Japan is likely to have erupted again on Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, less than five months after its last eruption.

The apparent eruption of Mt. Shinmoe on Kyushu island, about 900 km southwest Tokyo, occurred at 11:00 a.m. (03:00 GMT) and volcanic ash was reported falling at the foot of the mountain, the agency said, adding that volcanic quakes have increased since this morning.

Conditions of fumes are not visible due to the bad weather, it said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, according to police.

The 1,421-meter volcano last erupted in October, sending ash up to 2,300 meters into the air. The weather has maintained the volcanic alert level 3 on its five-point scale, which means the volcano should be off limits. It also called for caution against falling volcanic rocks and pyroclastic flows in areas within about 2 km of the crater.

Japan currently has 110 active volcanoes. In 2014, Mt. Ontake in central Japan erupted, killing at least 63 hikers in the country's worst postwar volcanic disaster.
