Oman- New passenger safety belt rule hailed

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The new ROP rule that all passengers in a vehicle should wear seat belts has been welcomed by many people in Oman.

Sulaiman al Rawahi, managing director, Oman Automobile Association said, 'This rule is very important. A seat belt for passengers is as important as the driver's seat belt. Passengers who are not wearing a seat belt can become projectiles during an accident. Unbuckled passengers can get ejected through the front, rear or side windows, resulting in death. I wanted the fine to be RO50 and not just RO10 fromMarch 1. I advise motorists to abide by the new traffic laws. They are in the interest of all members of society.'

Speaking toMuscat Daily , an ROP official said, 'In addition to the front seat passenger, fine will apply to all those not wearing the safety belt in a rear seat fromMarch 1. The fine will be RO10 and a black point will be added to the driver's licence. The new decision will also prevent overloading of passengers in cars.'

Nasser al Hosani, a driving instructor said the new rule is very important as studies have found that rear seat passengers suffer more serious injuries during accidents. 'An additional rear seat airbag can prevent the passenger's head from hitting the back of the front seat thus minimising the risk of injuries. The pre-requisite for rear seat safety, however, is the use of a belt.'

Rashed Faqir al Balushi, a rally car driver said that the new rule will ensure that all motorists are committed to safety. 'The fine and black points will help in reducing accidents and make Oman's roads safer. Seat belts save lives.'
