Russia orders truce in Syria

(MENAFN) Russia will to begin a daily humanitarian ceasefire for Eastern Ghouta near Damascus, after constant airstrikes on the rebel-held area, which have killed more than 500 people over the past week.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the pause in hostilities would last from 9 am to 2 pm each day, starting on Tuesday.

A humanitarian passage would be set up to allow civilians to leave the area, as Russia is a major ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The US State Department said: "Russia has the influence to stop these operations if it chooses to live up to its obligation under the (Security Council) ceasefire".

The US "calls for an immediate end to offensive operations and urgent access for humanitarian workers to treat the wounded and deliver badly needed humanitarian aid."
