Arab man pays Filipina's fine to free her from jail in Jeddah

(MENAFN- Asia Times) An Arab man paid a Filipino worker's fine – 100,000 riyals or US$26,667 – to release her from jail in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The Filipina named Junevie San Juan went to Jeddah to work as a dental assistant in October 2013. However, she was arrested a few days later for smuggling drugs from Manila, reported.

San Juan was sentenced to three years jail and ordered to pay a fine of 100,000 riyals (1.3 million Philippine pesos). She denied the allegations, saying she was the victim of a drug-smuggling syndicate.

Consul General RJ Sumague from the Philippine Consulate in Jeddah said San Juan had finished her jail term, but could not be released as she needed to pay the fine as well.

But in December a man named Abdulaziz Khamees talked with San Juan's parents and expressed his intention to help free their daughter as he believed she was innocent.

San Juan, who comes from Bicol, is now able to return to the Philippines.
