State of emergency declared in Ethiopia

(MENAFN) Following the resignation of Prime Minister Hailemariam DeSalegn, a state of emergency with immediate effect has been announced by the Ethiopian government, public television reported.

The television presenter said after reading a formal statement by the government that "at the end of a cabinet meeting today, the state of emergency has been declared from now."

"In some parts of the country, the Constitution and the constitutional order have been bypassed," he said, referring to the "ethnic clashes" and "chaos and insurgency".

"Because of the dangers facing the constitution and the constitutional order, we have reached a point where it is difficult to maintain the law by natural means," he said.

The announcement comes after the sudden resignation of the prime minister, who continues to run the government until a successor is appointed. The appointment was not known.
