Jordan- Interior Minister meets UN refugee chief

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Feb. 11 (Petra) -- Interior Minister, Ghaleb Zou'bi and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi, Sunday, discussed ways to help Jordan shoulder the burden of hosting refugees of diverse nationalities, as well as a number of issues of common interest.

"Jordan has been a safe haven for displaced people since its establishment as it witnessed the influx of refugees who placed security and socio-economic pressure on the Kingdom", said the minister, lauding the UNHCR's pivotal role in assisting refugee-hosting countries.

Further, he emphasized that there was a need to ramp up international community support to Jordan due to its difficult economic situation and constraints to which the Kingdom was subject in various areas.

Grandi, on his part, said his three-day visit to Jordan aims at highlighting the Kingdom's vital role towards the refugees, in a bid to channel assistance to the Kingdom to enable it continue its humanitarian mission towards the refugees.

He also said that the Syrian crisis was a turning point in the asylum issue due to the massive number of refugees, who placed significant burden on Jordan's already stretched resources.
