Arab League Secretary-General Ahmad Abul-Gheit in the 101st ministerial regular session of the Arab Social and Economic Council

CAIRO, Feb 8, (KUNA): The Arab region suffers from the most severe food shortage in the globe amid mounting poverty and hunger, the Arab League Secretary-General said on Thursday. The region witnessed hike in levels of hunger and poverty in the past years, said Ahmad Abul- Gheit, addressing the 101st ministerial regular session of the Arab Social and Economic Council.

Development in the Arab world is not proceeding in a normal manner amid lack of an adequate and supportive environment, said Abul-Ghait, singling out continuous violence, upheavals and 'unilateral decisions that undermine the Palestinian people rights.' He called on Arab states to seek closer solidarity and cooperation to face such challenges and secure stability and prosperity for the next generations in the Arab countries.

For his part, Saudi Minister of Finance Hamad Al-Bzaee, whose country chaired the previous session of the social council, urged Arab states to join 10 others that have become members in the Arab treaty for trade services. He also called for greater efforts to face the challenges that have persisted 50 years since forming the council.

His Sudanese counterpart, Mohammad Al-Rekabi, echoed same ideas noting that closer cooperation is necessary for political and economic stability in the Arab countries. Kuwait is represented at the session by Finance Undersecretary for Economic Affairs Nabil Abduljelil, Commerce and Industry Undersecretary Sheikh Nimr Al-Sabah, Observe of Arab Affairs at the Ministry of Finance Zuwaid Al-Mutairi, Director of the Gulf and Arab World Affairs at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Abdullah Al-Hajri. The session tackles a host of social and economic issues of common concern for the Arab states.
