Sri Lankan Fest begins at LuLu Hypermarket

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Sri Lankan Festival was launched yesterday, for the first time, at all LuLu outlets in Qatar under the theme ‘Rasavat Sri Lanka'.
The festival 'mainly exhibits Sri Lankan ethnic/grocery items and agricultural/organic produce, LuLu Group has said in a press statement, noting that it highlights the 'diverse culture, deep-rooted values and culinary heritage of Sri Lanka.
The festival was inaugurated by Sri Lankan ambassador ASP Liyanage at LuLu Hypermarket, Barwa City. The inaugural ceremony was also attended by Mohamed Althaf, director of LuLu Group International, and several distinguished guests from banks, schools and the retail and FMCG sectors, including a large gathering of shoppers and officials from LuLu outlets.
The festival also features some traditional art forms from Sri Lanka, including calypso, and other cultural programmes such as Kandyan dancing, etc, to create the appropriate ambiance. Among the highlights is a ‘fusion show' performed by students of Lasanthi Dancing Academy based on the popular Kandyan dance.
A wide range of Sri Lankan commodities and agricultural produce is available at discounted prices, and special counters have been set to facilitate tasting and sampling for customers. The festival continues until February 10.
LuLu Group has organised the festival in co-operation with its export unit YAS Lanka in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The unit was set up last year with a view to boost sourcing operations and bring in high-quality products for LuLu's chain of hypermarkets across the world, the statement noted. The Group said it has been exporting $5mn worth of fruits, vegetables and commodities from Sri Lanka, and the real measure of progress is that the quantum of export has gone up considerably since the opening of the new export distribution centre. LuLu Group has similar export distribution centres in 24 countries, including the UK, US, Spain, Turkey, Vietnam, Thailand, China and Africa.
The festival's launch coincides with Sri Lanka's Independence Day, adding more relevance and value to the festival, the statement adds. Further, the Group said it has plans to venture into the retail sector in the next phase with a 'world-class shopping mall and modern hypermarket in Colombo, and spadework is under way.
