Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group IV: Oman begins on a winning note


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman, led by its experienced campaigner Mohammed al Nabhani, made a confident start the 2018 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group IV competition with a 3-0 rout of Bangladesh at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Monday.

Playing the first tie of Pool A, Nabhani gave the hosts a solid start as he delivered a double bagel to Bangladesh's Sree-Amol Roy 6-0, 6-0 in just 55 minutes.

It was then the turn of young Abdullah al Barwani to help Oman take an unassailable 2-0 lead as he overcame Dipu Lal 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. In the doubles rubber, Nabhani and Younis al Rawahi raced past Ranjan Ram and Mohammed Rana 6-1, 6-3 for an emphatic 3-0 victory.

A delighted Oman captain Siddiq al Hashmi said, 'We could not have asked for a better start. Definitely I am pleased with my boys' dominant performance against Bangladesh today.'

'Mohammed [al Nabhani] gave us a great start. He showed his experience in the victory against Roy. In the second singles, we had some tense moments as Abdullah [al Barwani] suffered cramps but recovered to win the match'

Oman will next play against Iraq on Tuesday.

In the other Pool A game, UAE scored a comfortable 3-0 victory against Kyrgyzstan Abdulrahman al Janahi defeated Kirill Kistanov 6-1, 6-0 to give the UAE lead. Omar al Awadhi then defeated Evgeniy Babak 6-1, 6-0 to make it 2-0.

Fares al Janahi and Abdulrahman al Janahi completed UAE's win with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Babak and Georgy Kotlyarevsky in the doubles rubber.

In Pool B, Turkmenistan dominated Tajikistan winning its tie without conceding a single game in all three rubbers.

In another Pool B tie, Singapore scored a convincing 3-0 win against Guam.

The Group IV competition concludes on February 3 when the winner of Pool A will play-off against the runner-up in Pool B and the winner of Pool B will play-off against the runner-up in Pool A to determine the two nations that will be promoted to Asia/Oceania Zone Group III in 2019.
