Jordan- Kingdom braces for cold, snowy weekend


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Jan.24 (Petra)--A cold air mass accompanied by a depression centered over Cyprus is expected to start affecting the Kingdom on Thursday, pushing temperatures down and bringing cold and cloudy skies with heavy rain in the northern and central regions, the Jordan Meteorological Department(JMD) said in its daily brief.

In the evening, the JMD added, rain accompanied by thunder and lightning will spread to most parts of the country with southwesterly brisk winds.

Daytime temperatures forecast today in Amman, the northern and the southern cities will hover around 10 degrees Celsius, dropping down to 3, 2 and 1 respectively. Warmer conditions will prevail in the southern port city of Aqaba with highs reaching 20 degrees and lows standing at 11, the JMD stated.

As the cold airflow continues to blow in the Kingdom on Friday, temperatures will further plunge bringing chilly conditions with heavy rain accompanied by thunder, lightning and hail. Snowfall with strong gusts are also forecast in areas with altitude over than 900 meters above sea level, the JMD said.

Chilly conditions are forecast to continue on Saturday, with scattered showers of rain, with a remaining chance of snowfall in the highlands and southern regions. At night, the weather will start to gradually stabilize and clouds will decrease, but with frost formation in the hilly areas and the Badia regions, the JMD further said.
