Kuwait- Egypt's top Muslim cleric urges revived awareness of Jerusalem

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Jan 17 (KUNA) -- Al-Azhar's Grand Imam Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tayyeb said Wednesday that there should be an Arab and Muslim revival of public awareness of Jerusalem and holy sites in Palestine.

The call was made by Egypt's top Muslim cleric during a conference to support Jerusalem in response to US President Donald Trump's recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.

Arab, Muslim and international dignitaries are participating in Al-Azhar International Conference in Support of Jerusalem, which kicked off in Cairo today.

Al-Tayyeb said the gathering came amid critical circumstances that require concrete recommendations and suggestions aiming at raising public awareness of the Palestinian issue in general and Jerusalem in particular.

He emphasized that this year, 2018, should be the year of Jerusalem, a year in which moral and material support needs to be extended to the people of Jerusalem.

The conference adopts the motto of "World Conference in Support of Jerusalem" and attracts prominent national, regional and international figures, mainly the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark Tawadros II.

Kuwait is partaking in the international conference with a leading led by National Assembly (Kuwaitis parliament) Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim.

On December 6, 2017, US President Donald Trump made a controversial decision recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moving the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The move was widely and openly condemned by all Arab and Islamic countries, as well as most Western countries, and sparked protests and rallies in occupied Palestinian territories. (end) msh.rg.mt
