(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Dec 21 (KUNA) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the resolution, adopted by the UN General Assembly on Thursday, expresses clear-cut rejection of the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as capital of Israel.
"We welcome with great pleasure the UN General Assembly's overwhelming support for a historic resolution on Al-Quds Al-Sharif," Turkey's AA quoted him as writing on his Twitter account.
"We expect Trump administration to rescind without further delay its unfortunate decision, whose illegality has been clearly established by UNGA.
"On behalf of myself and the Turkish people, I extend my gratitude to everyone who has been supportive of the cause of Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif," Erdogan added.
On a similar note, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the UNGA resolution "created a new opportunity for peace efforts" in the region.
Turkey will continue to side with "its Palestinian brothers, humanity, Jerusalem, justice and those who are oppressed," Yildirim vowed.
International law views the West Bank - including East Jerusalem - as "occupied territory" and considers all Jewish settlement constructions there illegal.
The resolution, adopted by a recorded vote of 128 in favor, nine against and 35 abstentions, expresses "deep regret" over the US decision on December 6 concerning the status of Jerusalem and stresses that the Holy City "is a final status issue to be resolved through negotiations in line with relevant UN resolutions."
