(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) New York, Dec.20 (Petra)-- The 193-member United Nations General Assembly will vote on Thursday in a special emergency session on a resolution rejecting US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and considering it null and void.
In a joint letter, a copy of which was received by Petra, the ambassadors of Yemen and Turkey requested to resume the General Assembly emergency session on behalf of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The State of Palestine enjoys observer status. Therefore it can not participate in the voting.
The Arab-Islamic message pointed out the resolutions of the Arab League ministerial meeting in Cairo, the OIC summit in Turkey and the veto used by the US on December 18 in the Security Council on the decision about Jerusalem status.
The letter called for the resumption of the 10th General Assembly emergency special session in accordance with the "Uniting for peace", under the resolution the General Assembly resolution 377 (1950).
Under the" Uniting for peace " if the Security Council, because of lack of unanimity of the permanent members, fails to exercise its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, the General Assembly shall consider the matter immediately with a view to making appropriate recommendations to members for collective measures to maintain or restore international peace and security.
