Afghanistan- Ghani off to Turkey for OIC summit on Jerusalem


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday evening left Kabul for Turkey to attend an extraordinary meeting of (OIC) leader Istanbul.

The President, at the head of a high-level government delegation, departed for the Turkish city on Tuesday evening, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.

It said the Afghan president would express the 's government and people's views and concerns with regard to recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital and moving the US Embassy to the contested city at the Wednesday's gathering.

The president is accompanied by his Foreign Minister Saluddin Rabbani and other government officials on the visit.

US President Donald Trump on December 6 announced recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, triggering an almost universal diplomatic backlash.

Trump also ordered the US Department of State to shift the US Embassy in Tel Aviv to the contested city of Jerusalem.

The decision sparked protests all over the . Thousands of people in Afghan cities also staged protest rallies against President Trump decision.

Most of OIC members are expected to attend the day-long special conference called by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his capacity as the chair of the OIC summit.

The huddle will explore ways to deal with the situation created in the wake of the Trump administration's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
