KHARTOUM, 8th December, 2017 (WAM) -- The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, BADEA, and the Arab Organisation for Agricultural Development, AOAD, have signed three documents of cooperation in Khartoum to support the agricultural development and food security of African countries benefiting from the bank's assistance. Both organisations have their headquarters in the Sudanese capital.

The first document aims to establish a general framework for cooperation between the two institutions to strengthen links between the Arab and African countries, through joint efforts for the sustainable agricultural development and food security of these countries. It also aims to help people in the beneficiary countries working in agriculture, food security and investment, to learn about agricultural technology.

The second document covers the provision of technical assistance in laboratory diagnosis of animal diseases through a training course organised by the AOAD in cooperation with the Livestock Research Authority in Khartoum. This will raise the technical and scientific knowledge of people working with livestock about the diagnosis of cross-border diseases, helping to protect the livestock sector and to increase its role in the economy.

The documents also included a Letter of Understanding between BADEA, AOAD and the Sahel Group 'G5' on the financing of a study on the agricultural, animal and fishery qualifications of the countries of the group, and to prepare an integrated project covering the three sectors, to contribute to the food security of the group's population.

The documents were signed by BADEA's Director-General, Sidi Ould Tah, and the AOAD Director-General, Prof. Ibrahim Adam Al-Dekhairi.

The United Arab Emirates is a shareholder both in BADEA, which was founded in 1973, and in the AOAD, which is a subsidiary organisation of the Arab League.
