(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Kuwait's ambassador to Cyprus Ahmad Al-Wehaib delivered a donation of 200,000 euro from the government of Kuwait to The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP), the ambassador told KUNA on Saturday.
The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) is a bi-communal body established in 1981 by the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities with the participation of the United Nations. Following the establishment of an agreed list of missing persons, the CMP's objective is to recover, identify, and return to their families, the remains of 2001 persons (502 Turkish Cypriots and 1,493 Greek Cypriots) who went missing during the inter-communal fighting of 1963 to 1964 and the events of 1974.
The Kuwaiti donation is for supporting CMP's efforts to alleviate the anxiety of many Cypriote families regarding their missing loved ones, said the ambassador over the phone from Cyprus's capital city of Nicosia, where yesterday the donation was handed by the ambassador at the presidential palace.
Cypriote officials expressed their gratitude for the donation which they saw as a commendable humanitarian gesture from Kuwait.
Kuwait and Cyprus enjoy good relations in areas of commerce, economy, and politics. Last October the Cypriote president Nicos Anastasiades visited Kuwait at the head of an economic delegation where he signed with Kuwaiti officials a number of bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding.
