Turkey: 1.5 mln debit cards to be issued for Syrian migrants by 2020


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, July 23 (KUNA) -- The President of the Turkish Red Crescent, Kerem Kinik, announced on Monday that approximately 1.5 million Syrian refugees will benefit from debit cards within the framework of the social safety program for emergencies supported by the UN.
Kinik said the European Commission will announce a new grant that would be transferred monthly to debit cards for approximately 1.5 million Syrian refugees by 2020, reported Anadolu news agency.
Kinik added, Turkey has carried the burden of more than 3.5 million refugees who fled from the war in Syria that has been going on for more than seven years.
Half of the refugees are children and among them 365,000 students receiving education in Turkey as part of a project implemented by the UNESCO, clarified Kinik.
The social safety program was launched by end of 2016, through which every refugee in Turkey is granted USD 25 every month which he can only withdraw from the ATMs of the Halk national bank. (end) rs.aq
