Jordanian, Russian FMs discuss political solution for Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, July 22 (KUNA) -- Foreign Ministers of Jordan and Russia, Ayman Safadi and Sergei Lavrov respectively, discussed on Sunday developments in Syria and efforts for a political solution, that "preserves Syria's unity and stability and accepted by the Syrian people." A press release by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry said both Safadi and Lavrov discussed in a phone call the return of Syrian migrants and ideas proposed by Russia to start organising and facilitating their return.
The press release added both Ministers confirmed the effectiveness of the cooperation between Jordan and Russia, and their keenness on continuing this pace of coordination to find a solution for the Syrian crisis, in addition to other regional issues with "transparency and trust" between political leaderships in both countries.
It was also mentioned that Safadi briefed his Russian counterpart on the expatriation of 422 Syrians through Jordan, who would be resettled in western countries, which provided legally binding pledges for their resettlements within three months.
Jordan allowed the UN to organise the expatriation of the 422 Syrians on humanitarian grounds after Britain, Germany and Canada pledged to host them within three months. The original number of Syrians was 827 but it was eventually reduced to 422.
The Syrian nationals used to work for the Civil Defense in areas under the control of the opposition but were forced to flee in the occupied Golan Heights after the Syrian Army launched an attack in that area.
Safadi and Lavrov met earlier this month in Moscow to coordinate the efforts to reach a cease-fire in southern Syria in order to ensure the safety of the civilians. (end) mjb.aq
