(MENAFN) Some 800 members of the White Helmets were rescued by Israel from Syria on Saturday, Israel-based Haaretz quoted the German newspaper Bild.

Hundreds of people were transported across the Syrian-Israeli border and then taken to Jordan, according to the report.

"Following an Israeli Government directive and at the request of the United States and additional European countries, the IDF recently completed a humanitarian effort to rescue members of a Syrian civil organization and their families," statement from the Israeli military said.

"The civilians were evacuated from the war zone in Southern Syria due to an immediate threat to their lives," the statement continued, adding that "the civilians were subsequently transferred to a neighboring country.

According to Reuters, Jordan's official Petra news agency said on its website the kingdom "authorised the United Nations to organize the passage of about 800 Syrian citizens through Jordan for resettlement in Western countries".
