UAE- Reem Al Hashemy meets with US officials and UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths in Washington

WASHINGTON,DC, 19th July, 2018 (WAM) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy,briefed US government and UN officials on the Arab Coalition's humanitarian assistance efforts and push for a political resolution in Yemen.

In a series of meetings with Members of Congress and Administration officials in Washington, including US Agency for International Development Acting Deputy Administrator David Moore, she and UAE Ambassador to the US Yousef Al Otaiba provided updates on the Coalition's efforts to restore the legitimate government of Yemen and address the humanitarian needs of the Yemeni people.

In a meeting with UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths, the Minister and Ambassador affirmed the UAE and the Arab Coalition's strong support for Griffiths' efforts to facilitate the Houthis' peaceful handover of Hodeida port and city to the legitimate government of Yemen.

"The UAE is working closely with the Special Envoy and UN agency partners. We are committed to ensuring access for humanitarian assistance and achieving a political solution to restore the legitimate government," she said.

The officials also discussed the UAE's close cooperation with UN agencies to address the humanitarian situation.

Throughout their meetings, the Emirati officials underscored the UAE's substantial commitment to provide humanitarian assistance in Hodeida and other areas of the country.

More broadly, they also highlighted the importance of the UAE partnership with the US on shared security priorities.

"We had very productive discussions with the Administration and members of Congress to discuss the Arab Coalition's efforts to restore the legitimate government in Yemen and prevent Iranian interference," said Ambassador Al Otaiba. "We also discussed our combined efforts with the US to ensure regional security."

Total UAE assistance to Yemen from April 2015 to June 2018 amounted to $3.78 billion. The UAE has contributed $465 million toward the United Nations Humanitarian Response Plan in Yemen for 2018.

The UAE is part of the Arab Coalition that is in Yemen at the invitation of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi and in compliance with UN Security Council Resolutions.
