MENAFN- Asia Times) About 300 crocodiles were killed by an angry mob in Indonesia's West Papua province on Saturday after a local man was killed by one. A group of villagers entered a breeding farm on Saturday and killed an estimated 292 crocodiles.
According to police, the incident was an act of revenge after a 48-year-old man was killed by a crocodile, The Straits Times reported. Police said the man was killed after he entered an enclosure to look for grass for his livestock.
Basar Manullang, the head of Indonesia's Natural Resources Conservation Agency in West Papua, said one of the employees of the farm heard someone screaming for help. 'They ran to the scene where they saw a person being mauled by a crocodile,' Manullang said.
The owner of the farm promised to pay compensation to the man's family. However, the family and other locals were not happy with the compensation alone and went to the farm with knives, machetes and shovels and killed the crocodiles.
Dewa Made Sidan Sutrahna, the district police chief, said criminal charges may be filed. Police are now investigating and questioning witnesses.
