Washington challenges five WTO countries for tariffs against US products

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, July 16 (KUNA) -- The US launched five separate disputes at the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Monday against China, the EU, Canada, Mexico and Turkey to challenge tariffs they imposed in response to President Donald Trump's actions on trade in aluminum and steel.
A statement from the Office of The US Trade Representative said that the duties imposed by Trump are "justified under international law agreements," but the retaliatory duties on US exports are "completely without justificiation under international law.
"Instead of working with us to address a common problem, some of our trading partners have elected to respond with retaliatory tariffs designed to punish American workers, farmers and companies," said US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer in the statement. "These tariffs appear to breach each WTO Member's commitments under the WTO Agreement." (end) ak.bs
