Oman- All set for Asian junior handball meet in Salalah


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman is all set to host the 16th edition of the Asian Men's Junior (U19) Handball Championship, which will kick offon Mondayin Salalah

This is the first time that Oman is hosting the prestigious Asian meet and a total of 14nations including the hosts will be competing for the title.The championship will also serve as the qualifiers for the Junior World Championship, which is scheduled to be held in Spain. The top three teams from the Salalah championship willdirectly qualify worlds.

Following the withdrawal of Palestine and Uzbekistan, the 14 teams have been pooled in four groups. Group A comprises South Korea, Japan, China and Lebanon while Group B has Qatar, Iraq and Syria. Group C consists of Saudi Arabia, defending champion Bahrain and Chinese Taipei while Group D has Oman, Yemen, India and Iran.On the opening day a total of six games will be played with Oman taking on Yemen in its opening clash.As part of the team's preparations, Oman juniors, underexperienced Egyptian coachMohammed Abd Elmoety,travelled to Bahrain and Slovenia ahead of the championship.The championship is hosted by the Oman Handball Association (OHA) under the auspices of the Asian Handball Federation. The final of the championship will be held onJuly 26.H E Sheikh Salim bin Mustahil al Mashani, Adviser at the Diwan of Royal Court, willinaugurate the championship in the presence of top officialsincluding Said al Shahri, OHA chairman.
