France's Macron backs financial sanctions on EU members rejecting migrants

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed his support for eventual financial sanctions for European countries which ruled out cooperation over the migrant situation.

"Mechanisms of sanctions would exist in case of no-solidarity", the French president said to reporters during a joint press conference with visiting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

President Macron stated "we can not have countries that benefit massively from the solidarity of the European Union and who massively claim their national selfishness when it comes to migratory issues."

He also stressed that "on migration, national solutions do not work" following the debate on migration which was raised over the stranded Aquarius rescue ship.
