A man filmed in a video claiming to be a police officer and threatening to arrest a group of Filipino women he saw drinking in Pasir Ris Park in Singapore while an alcohol ban was in force, has been confirmed as a fraud.

The 20-year-old man in the video, who told the women he could put them in jail, is not a member of the Singapore Police Force and has been invited to assist police with their investigations, according to Stomp, a news website owned by The Straits Times which cited a police statement.

According to Singapore law, impersonating a public servant is a violation of Section 170 of the Penal Code. Offenders can be sentenced to jail for up to two years and also be liable to a fine.

People who watched the video online flooded the comment section of the Facebook page of SGchineseclub since it was posted on June 19, speculating about the credibility of the man as he spoke in an offensive and discriminatory way to the foreign domestic workers.

One person said the man's black T-Shirt suggested he could be a member of the Fire and Rescue Specialist from the Singapore Civil Defense Force which is under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Meanwhile, police have urged the public to stay vigilant when people claim to be police officers. Citizens can ask for the officer's warrant card to verify his identity before complying with any instructions.
