A wild boar was shot dead by police after it was seen wandering in a residential area in Northwestern China's Shaanxi province over the weekend.

At 4am on June 16, police received a report of an adult boar in the Xiguan Residential District in Hanzhong. A team of police officers was deployed to try to catch the wild animal before the area became crowded with people taking their morning exercise.

After a four-hour search, police found the boar and ushered it to an open area , where it was shot dead . No one was injured during the incident.

Police in Shaanxi province have been extra cautious about wild animal reports since a 66-year-old man was killed by a large boar earlier this year.

At 4:30pm on January 31, a 100-kilogram boar ran into a village in Ankang in Shaanxi province and attacked a man surnamed Zhang. Closed-circuit TV footage showed the animal repeatedly biting Zhang despite attempts by another villager to beat its back with a shovel. Zhang was later certified dead.

During the incident, Zhang's daughter-in-law was knocked down and injured by the boar while attempting to call the police.

The wild boar was later killed by the police. In Shaanxi, boars cannot be killed without a licence as the animals are protected by law.
