(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) More than 7,000 cases were handled by the Abu Dhabi Police bicycle patrols around tourist, residential and commercial areas last year, the police revealed on Wednesday.
"The bicycle security is part of Abu Dhabi Police's strategy, which is to provide humanitarian services and speedy response and intervention during emergencies," said Major Khalid Al Hamli, deputy general supervisor of bicycle patrols at the Abu Dhabi Police.
He said a total of 7,690 miscellaneous cases were dealt with in 2017. "This initiative enhances the engagement between the police and the public, because communities are turning to the patrols that are near by, when faced with situations."
The bicycle patrols not only aim to enhance safety and security among the community, but also provide quick response and action in urgent circumstances.
The patrols can be seen roaming around beaches in the Capital, residential blocks and commercial buildings throughout the year, since its launch in October 2016.
Major Al Hamli explained that bicycle patrols covering emirate are a "first type of responder" on the field, providing assistance in various cases, including accidents, and rapidly intervene and communicate with the central command room. He said the patrols can be spotted with their blue bicycles, emergency lights, bright yellow vests and black trousers.
"The Abu Dhabi Police launched a number of innovative initiatives to support field work and communicate directly with the public and are receiving positive responses and the best results in the fight against crime, while promoting awareness on security and safety."
The cyclists usually wear police uniforms, while some wear civilian clothing, and are often located around commercial and residential areas, as well as beaches and parks. They ride for more than 30km each day and speak at least two languages, allowing them to easily communicate with nationals and expats.
There are more than 34,000 police officers currently in Abu Dhabi, and by 2021, the Capital will have more than 47,500 officers, thus representing one officer for every 58 people - further enhancing the safety of the city.
