Oman- Muttrah Fort reopens after renovation


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Muttrah Fort has been officially opened to the public after a major renovation project of about ten years.

Speaking toMuscat Daily , Sultan bin Jamil al Makhmari, acting director, Historical Site Development Department, Ministry of Tourism said, 'Muttrah Fort was officially opened to the public on June 18 (Monday). The renovation project has two phases.

'The first is the redevelopment of Muttrah Fort, which is now over. The second phase is that of investment wherein we will hand over the fort management to a company that will run it. The investment phase is ongoing and will soon be completed.'

Makhmari said that as of now entry to the fort is free, but there is a proposal to introduce a visitor's fee. 'Once ready we will send it to the authorised office for approval. We have proposed an entry fee of 500bz for those above 12 years, while for children between 6 and 12 years it will be 200bz. Tickets will be available at 100bz per person in case of large families of nine members or more.'

The fort features nine cannons as well as other weapons. Makhmari said the view of Muttrah from the top of the fort is absolutely stunning. 'People can see the sea, the mountains and the city from there. As part of the extensive renovation work, new lightings have been installed. We started renovation work in 2008.'

Timings: Saturdays to Thursdays:9am to 4pm; Fridays:9amto11am and 2pmto4pm.
