Former Maldivian Home Minister Umar Naseer to contest Presidential election


(MENAFN- NewsIn.Asia) Male, June 18 (AVAS/newsin.asia): Former Maldivian Home Minister and leader of the Islamic Democratic Party (IDP), Umar Naseer, is contesting the Maldivian Presidential election to be held in September as an Independent candidate.

Naseer's is formally aligned with the Jamhooree Party of self-exiled leader Gasim Ibrahim. Ibrahim has been barred from contesting the election because he is overage, being 65.

Addressing the people of Maldives through a video message, Naseer said that he would counter drugs and gang crime.

He lambasted previous governments for their inaction to significantly control gang crime and violence as well as the trade and use of drugs.

While pointing out that most jail inmates are drug abusers and victims, Naseer criticized the lack of facilities to rehabilitate them.

He also promised to form a special drug enforcement unit with a link to the Maldives Police and Customs. The promised that the drug enforcement unit will be granted special authority.

Naseer also promised to increase the number of sniffing dogs which will be stationed at the airport and commercial harbors.

Furthermore the former home minister pledged to improve awareness in students and children through various health and awareness camps and programs, adding that special programs will be directed towards drug victims to help them rehabilitate themselves and join the community as law abiding citizens.

The Islamic Democratic Party (IDP) was founded in 2005. The founding members are

founding members are Umar Naseer, Mohamed Haneef, Ahmed Inaz, Mohamed Ibrah Didi, Abdulla Waheed and Mahamed Hassan Manik.

Naseer was police officer who was trained in the UK in other countries. He operates a security firm called Alarms Pvt Ltd. and also Whale Submarine, which is a tourist submarine.
