(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Much more valuable than the $2.5 billion pledged by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and UAE to Jordan at the end of the Mecca meeting is the explanation offered for this timely intervention in Jordan's economy and financial difficulties.
The final communique of the Mecca summit said in carefully chosen words that the decision to support Jordan is motivated by "the fraternal ties between the four states and the Islamic and Arab principles and values".
The support came in the form of a deposit at the Central Bank of Jordan, guarantees to the World Bank on behalf of Jordan, budget support for five years and funding economic projects in Jordan.
His Majesty King Abdullah thanked Saudi King Salman Bin Abdulaziz for convening the Mecca meeting in the first place and Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah and UAE's Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Mohammad Bin Rashed Al Maktoom for warmly endorsing holding the urgent meeting.
This honourable intervention at this critical time will be appreciated and noted by all Jordanians, who had to endure unusual economic and fiscal hardships in recent years. The aid package gives a vivid expression to inter-Arab solidarity, based on shared principles, common vision and values.
The aid offered to Jordan is also an investment in Arab security and stability in this part of the world, where wars and conflicts are still raging. But above all, the generous Arab support shows the extent of the appreciation and gratitude of the three Arab countries for the stature and wise leadership of King Abdullah.
The aid is an article of faith and trust in the King's vision, wise leadership and steadfastness in support of Arab unity and solidarity.
Jordan can now breathe a sigh of relief thanks to the three Arab leaders, who took the initiative to come to its rescue at a critical time.
