DOHA: Eyeing an improvement in the next season, QNB Stars League (QSL) side Umm Salal have signed Nigerian striker Ighodaro Christian Osaguona for one season to replace Tunisian attacking midfielder Oussama Darragi, who joined them halfway through last season.

The new signing completed the list of Umm Salal's overseas recruits as Ivorian Yannick Sagbo, Syrian Mahmoud Mawas and Moroccan Adel Rhaili stayed from the last season.

The 27-year-old Osaguona played his first international game with Nigerian team in September 2014 against South Africa.

Before joining Umm Salal, the striker was a part of Belgian club KVC Westerlo.

Osaguona was unveiled at a press conference on Sunday with Umm Salal Sports Club President Sheikh Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani welcoming the striker.

'We're happy with the signing of Osaguona and we hope he'll be a strong addition to us as we bid to put up a strong performance in the coming season as well, said Sheikh Hamad while exuding confidence that the squad was now strong enough to achieve outstanding results.

'We negotiated with many professional players before finalising the deal with him, in consultation with the technical staff and we are looking forward to a strong performance.

Osaguona expressed his happiness to have joined Umm Salal and said he came to know about the strong level of competition in the QSL from his compatriot Michael Babatunde, who played in Qatar.

'I am targeting a strong performance for my new side in the forthcoming season, said the striker.

In the last QSL season, Umm Salal finished on 5th spot behind Al Gharafa with Al Duhail, Al Sadd and Al Rayyan respectively claiming the first three positions.

The new season will kick off on August 1 with the Super Cup between QSL and HH the Amir Cup winners Al Duhail, and HH the Amir Cup runners-up Al Rayyan, while the new QSL season will start on August 3.
