MANAMA, 28th May 2018 (WAM) - The Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development, in collaboration with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities in the Kingdom of Bahrain, organised a community evening entitled "The Emirati Malid", a cultural event that celebrates religious occasions, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
These events were held in the presence of Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, Sheikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Culture and Antiquities Authority, Sheikh Sultan bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Ambassador to Bahrain, and a number of high-level officials representing both nations.
Noura Al Kaabi expressed her happiness at the commencement of the Emirati Malid in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which reflects the depth of heritage and historical ties between the two friendly countries, highlighting that the art of the Malid is an opportunity to exchange knowledge, news, trade, and to create effective communication between cultural and heritage institutions in Bahrain and the UAE, which reflects the significant interests and cooperative efforts of the two countries.
Al Kaabi pointed out that the participation of the UAE sends a message of appreciation and celebration to the city of Muharraq after being named the Islamic Cultural Capital 2018, demonstrates the city's cultural diversity, its history, and the originality of its heritage as one of the most important human and cultural sites in the Gulf region.
Sheikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa said "the event of the Emirati Malid coincides with the integrated programme developed by the Bahrain Culture and Antiquities Authority to celebrate the city of Muharraq, the capital of Islamic culture in 2018. The Authority has offered a variety of events over the years through cultural initiatives, annual festivals, and special events. This event is an opportunity to acquaint the Bahraini people to a glimpse of the rich Emirati heritage and history, which will strengthen the cultural relations between Bahrain and the UAE, as well as enhance knowledge exchange between the two nations."
As for the importance of the Malid in Emirati heritage, Noura Al Kaabi said: "The Malid represents an integral part of Emirati folklore and heritage, in which fathers and grandfathers were raised, and we seek to preserve its essence to teach and pass down to future generations by adhering to its originality and keeping pace with the demands of changing times. The Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development has taken the responsibility of developing culture and interest in different forms of art, especially through the creation of appropriate strategies for revitalising youth's abilities, and devising effective methods for restoring and protecting Emirati cultural heritage. However, the Malid is not only a tradition practiced as part of our heritage, it is an authentic art that transcends human feelings, elevates thought, inspires souls, and sparks the adoption of noble values as the Malid is distinguished by its depth and ability to combine live performance and poetic arts."
Al Kaabi pointed to the importance of local folk arts in promoting cultural identity and its vital role in building a positive and tolerant society capable of staying leveled in the global cultural community by introducing the world to the human aspect of cultural heritage and art.
She added, "Emirati folklore and heritage paints the cultural and civilizational image of the our people because it is acts as a symbol of countries and their progress, which is characterised by the their adherence to customs and traditions, continued preservation efforts of their heritage, and protection from extinction. As we celebrate the year of Zayed, we draw inspiration from the ideas of the late founding father the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in the preservation of heritage. He founded the modern cultural identity of the UAE, and built bridges of knowledge between our nation and all others, which makes us proud of our heritage and history."
The Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development called for concerted efforts among different countries and institutions to promote the exchange of visits and events in the fields of arts and folklore so as to ensure its sustainability within societies, because heritage represents and reflects the unique views of current and passing generations, and most of all the development of civilizations around the world.
