(MENAFNEditorial) (CNS) - Five people, including a security guard, are assisting police in their investigations after 16 women, including 14 Venezuelans were rescued from a house in the capital.
Police said that the women, including one Cuban and a national from the Dominican Republic, may have been brought into the country illegally and that they have been placed into protective care while the investigations into alleged trafficking in persons (TIP) continue.
Coordinator of the Countering Trafficking in Persons Unit, at the Ministry of Social Protection, Tanisha Williams-Corbin, said the women, between the ages 15 and 35, are now benefitting from psychosocial support.
She said that the officials at the ministry are also collaborating with the Department of Citizenship to ensure measures are in place to allow the females to extend their stay in Guyana so as to further assist with the investigation.
Williams-Corbin said this is in keeping the Combating of Trafficking In Persons Act Section 19-1 which mandates that 'victims who corporate with the investigation or any other part of the crime of trafficking are to be extended the opportunity to extend their time in Guyana if they want.'
