Israeli court permits using live fire against protesters in Gaza

(MENAFN) Israel's Supreme Court gave Israel "a green light to its continued use of snipers and live fire against Palestinian protesters", Adalah - The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel and Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights, which filed one of the petitions, said in a statement on Friday.

"The Israeli Supreme Court completely ignored the broad factual basis presented to it by the petitioners, which includes multiple testimonies of wounded and reports of international organizations involved in documenting the killing and wounding of unarmed protesters in Gaza", it added.

These remarks come after the court rejected two petitions brought by human rights groups demanding Israel's army to stop using snipers and live ammunition against unarmed Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Yesh Din, one of the rights groups that brought the other petition, also criticised the court's decision, saying "the judges missed an opportunity to prevent the continuation of the killing and injuries".

Tens of thousands of demonstrators converged March 30 on the Gaza Strip's 45-kilometer-long (28-mile) eastern border with Israel to demand their right to return to their ancestral homes in historical Palestine. In anticipation of the mass demonstrations, Israel deployed thousands of occupation troops along the border. On May15, 65 people were martyred; the attacks injured nearly 13,000 victims.
