Iraq: Russian company discovers new oilfield near Baghdad

(MENAFN) A new oilfield south of Iraq's capital Baghdad has been discovered by Russian oil giant Rosneft, Trade Arabia quoted report.

After over a year of drilling in the unexplored region, the oilfield, named Salman, has been uncovered, The Moscow Times reported.

The discovery will bring the company a step closer towards achieving its plans of expanding outside Russia, citing a Rosneft statement.

Rosneft had last year struck a number of deals in Iraqi Kurdistan, including the purchase of a majority stake in the region's key oil pipeline that runs to Turkey and a deal to purchase oil until 2019, said The Moscow Times report.
