(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) TALUQAN (Pajhwok): Taliban
Takhar education director Abdul Sami Abdyar told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban had closed 15 schools in Darqad, four in Khawja Bahauddin and three in Ba ngi Qala districts and one in Khawja Ghar district.
He said the Taliban had warned if their shadow provincial education chief was not released from the spy network, they would not let reopen the closed schools.
He said negotiations were underway with a Taliban delegation through local people to find a peaceful solution, but so far there has been no breakthrough.
The Darqad district's administrative chief, Saifuddin Mushtaq, said that Taliban had warned if their education director was not freed, they would close other schools and would create hurdles to the election process.
He said schools had never been closed in the district in the past and the Taliban had never shown any opposition to the education process, but all it started with the arrest of their self-proclaimed education officer.
Abdul Jabar, a resident of Tarko locality, said: 'My two children have been home since the closure of schools.'
He added the Taliban militants closed schools over the past two weeks in areas under their control and also threatened government servants against performing duty.
But the governor's spokesman Sanatullah Timor said they could not release the Taliban education director.
He said clearing operations would be conducted in areas under Taliban to enable students to attend classes.
The Taliban have not yet commented about the closure of schools.
