Construction on 3rd phase of Cairo metro line 3 begins


(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) class="p1">Prime Minister Sherif Ismail witnessed on Wednesday the construction launch for the third phase of the Cairo metro's third line, which will run from Ataba to Bulaq El Dakrour at a length of 17.7 km.

The cost of the entire third line is up to EGP 100bn, said the prime minister on the sidelines of the ceremony, while the first line's maintenance cost stands at EGP 20bn. He added that the Cairo metro requires EGP 140bn through 2022 for the completion of the third and fourth lines.

The project will be financed by the European Investment Bank via a soft loan of €900m, about 60% of the total cost , while the remainder will be funded from the state budget.

The third phase of the metro's third line is divided into three stages. The first stage covers a length of 4 km. Its four underground stations are Nasser, Maspero, Zamalek, and Kit Kat. That first stage will be completed in 55 months. The second stage will be 6.6 km long and cover six stations from Sudan Road through Imbaba to the Rod El Farag station. It is planned to be completed in 65 months. The third stage will be 7.1 km long with five stations, from Tawfikia through Wadi El Nile and Al-Doual, and will end at the Cairo University station. It is scheduled to be completed in 74 months.
