Qatar- Family doctors crucial to health care, says PHCC

Doha: Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has acknowledged the important role family doctors play in the success of Qatar's health care system.

The Family Medicine Residency Training Program at PHCC aims to graduate highly competent and up-to-date qualified Family Physicians who are confidently able to lead the health care system in Qatar providing continuous, evidence-based and high health care service standards for all patients.

Since the establishment of the programme in 1995, there are 46 Senior consultants, 24 Specialist and currently there are 53 doctors in the program.

Dr Muna Taher, Program Director for Family Medicine Residency Program, said, 'Family doctors have a vital role in harnessing their personal and professional skills to build trusting relationships with patients and raise awareness by offering guidance on how to best overcome daily hindrances and live a healthy lifestyle. Our doctors are trained to deliver high-quality healthcare by applying best practice.

As part of strengthening the leadership and knowledge of our Family Doctors, PHCC has established a strong partnership with other healthcare providers in Qatar such as HMC, Sidra Medicine and Aspetar in order to improve and deliver the best patient care. There is also a strong partnership with Qatar University and Weil Cornell Medical School in order to equip the future doctors of Qatar with all the necessary knowledge and opportunity.

Family doctors play an important part in the society, as through their personal and professional knowledge and established relationship with the patient they are often the first point of contact for any medical advice.

To bring more awareness to the community, PHCC has organised several events promotions and celebrated the World Family Doctor day. The newly opened Health centres of Muaither and Al Wajba offered a tour of the premises to government corporations and local schools on that day.

PHCC brought awareness to the family medicine programme available at PHCC with activities, gifts and information for those who visited the stand. There was a staff event in Doha Marriot that presented the opportunity to mark achievements, recognise efforts and developments within themselves. By hosting that event, PHCC created a platform to share a vast knowledge. Besides, there was some communication activities which was titled by ‘Print, Digital, Film and Animation'. Through this event, PHCC created communication path and promoted content to reach the target audience by capturing their interest. Moreover, to engage the public a ‘ Mall Roadshow', which engaged public by giving them an access to this PHCC team and consulted visitors on how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Qatar is ranked 13th worldwide in terms of quality of health care and is in line with PHCC's vision to be Qatar's primary health care provider of choice. Family doctors play a vital role in achieving this objective. The World Family Doctor day is celebrated around the world on the May 19 every year to highlight the contribution of family doctors in the healthcare systems around the world.
