DOHA: Teyseer Building Materials and Transport Company recently hosted a seminar on ‘Concrete and Innovative Use of Plastics'.

The aim of the seminar was to discuss deterioration of concrete in Qatar and innovative use of plastics at construction sites. The seminar was attended by over 70 consultants and contractors in Doha.

The first session was conducted by Dr Nasser A Al Nuaimi, Assistant Professor at Qatar University Civil Engineering Department. He shared the results of his extensive research covering the behaviour of concrete in Qatar over the last 40 years. It is a common perception that the high heat and harsh conditions lead to faster deterioration of concrete in Qatar. Surprisingly, the research conducted by Al Nuaimi shows, if the concrete is poured and cured in the right manner, the deterioration is limited even after 40 years.

He therefore emphasised the importance of concrete curing and recommended that the concrete should be cured ideally for 28 days but at least for 14 days.

The second session was conducted by Manish Naik, an official of Supreme Industries India, a leading manufacturer of plastics for various purposes including construction.

Supreme Industries is a 75 years old publicly listed company that processes over half a million tonnes of plastics in a year. Naik presented their construction-related products and its innovative applications, particularly in joint filler boards, vapours barrier, roof filler and floor protector.

Naik stressed that their products are environmentally friendly and are now used in many markets in the Gulf. Supreme Industries, now exclusively represented by Teyseer Building Materials for their construction related products, also participated in Project Qatar.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, a Teyseer spokesman said that they were focused on bringing topics of interest to consultants and contractors through such interactive sessions. 'The response has been tremendous. We had twice the audience we anticipated and the reactions from them have been very positive he said.
