Lift ban on transportation of furniture, govt urged

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Carpenters in eastern Kunar province have asked the government to grant them permission for transporting pieces of furniture.

Around 400 factories have been functional in Kunar, where wooden desks, cabinets, doors, windows and other products are made. But a ban on their transportation from Kunar has hit the industry.

Carpenters warned if transportation of their products was not allowed out of Kunar, they would stage protests in different provinces.

Abdul Rahim, who works in a small factory in Asadabad, said they made furniture and other items using broken parts of trees.

He complained their business had suffered as a result of the ban on transportation of timber from Kunar.

Ashiqullah, another businessman, said he had been working as carpenter in Asadabad for the past 12 years.

Currently facing economic problems, he urged the government to allow him transportation of wood products to other provinces of the country.

Farhad Durrani, head of the Kunar Carpenters Union (KUC), said over 400 factories were active in the province, offering 10,000 work opportunities.

He added after government ban of Kunar timber their business had stopped and people associated with this business faced multiple problems.

Abdul Ghani Musamim, the governor€™s spokesman, acknowledged problems faced by carpenters. The ban had been imposed in line with a presidential order, he explained.

The carpentry business has suffered a setback due to the ban. Thousands of people in the mountainous province are associated with carpentry.
