(MENAFN- Arab Times) Parents blamed for child beggars

KUWAIT CITY, May 20: Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Hamid Al-Azmi has identified nine main reasons for the phenomenon of private tuitions, insisting that it has nothing to do with the educational process or curricula, reports Al-Qabas daily.
In response to a parliamentary question posed by Deputy National Assembly Speaker Essa Al-Kandari, the minister said teachers, students and parents are responsible for the rampancy of this phenomenon.
He summarized the main reasons behind this phenomenon as follows:-
1. Students with low academic achievements resort to private tuitions to improve themselves and respond to the special educational needs
2. Parents succumb to the pressing demands of their children in getting high grades
3. Openness of the community and information technology have diverted a large part of children's attention from focusing on academic and educational achievement
4. Psychological and personal motives of the students and their guardians
5. High absenteeism and nonattendance for various reasons
6. Parents forego their responsibilities regarding their children's academic follow-up
7. Encouragement by teachers to take up private classes directly and indirectly
8. Students who neglect their studies throughout the semester resort to private classes to make amends
9. Negligence by teachers in disseminating and delivering educational information during classes.
Meanwhile, in another unrelated development, Kuwait National Child Protection Society has condemned what it referred as 'abusive behavior by some weak-hearted parents', lamenting that parents who incite their children to beg at traffic signals endanger the lives and health of their children, reports Al-Qabas daily.
It said these parents are harming their children psychologically and physically by putting them up as bait to attract sympathy from passersby for financial gains.
The society urged Ministry of Interior to intervene in this matter and take necessary legal measures to deal with these acts, which it referred as 'criminal', especially since these parents are exposing their children to dangerous gases emanating from car exhausts and the burning sun rays and exploiting their children's innocence for public sympathy.
It called for the need to provide safe and healthy life for children and challenge all who abuse children's rights.
