Google Duo update brings screen sharing feature, but it's broken

The much-awaited screen-sharing feature in Google Duo, which was spotted in beta stage last October, is finally here.
Google has started rolling out an update for its Duo app (Android v34) which introduces the screen-sharing feature.
With this feature, users will be able to share their phone's screen with others during a video call.
Unfortunately, the feature is broken as of now.

How will Google Duo screen sharing feature work?
Easy-peasy
To use the feature, tap on your screen to see the new screen sharing icon above the front/rear camera toggle.
Tapping the icon pops-up a notification which asks for your permission to start screen sharing.
When you tap on 'Start Now', a red border appears which shows the part of the screen that's being recorded, along with floating pause and stop buttons.
Unfortunately, the feature is not working properly as of now
Its broken
According to several reports, the Google Duo screen share feature appears to be totally broken and doesn't work as intended.
The feature is getting activated and it shows the caller that the screen is being shared, but the receiver just sees a frozen image of the caller - generally a gray/black frame instead of the actual phone screen.
