Greek Nationalists attack mayor Yiannis Boutaris in event


(MENAFN) Officials declared that the mayor of Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city, has been hospitalized for treatment after he was hit by a group of civilians. .

Yiannis Boutaris, aged 75, has been kicked in the head and legs and hit with bottles by nearly 12 outraged nationalists over his presence at a remembrance event.

The mayor, whose popular for his anti-nationalist views, appeared at a ceremony mark the death of ethnic Greeks by Turks in World War One.

Mr Boutaris declared: "it was a nightmare,", adding that "there were several people that attacked me. They were hitting me everywhere.", according to the Greek Reporter website.
