Qatar- Al Ruwais customs thwarts smuggling of 13 pieces of hashish

DOHA: The General Authority of Customs, in cooperation with a security agency, seized narcotics belonging to passengers on a wooden boat coming from an Asian country by sea to Al Ruwais Port.

The details of the incident came when customs inspectors on suspicion on the passengers inspected and discovered that they were carrying the substance of cannabis drug hidden in a secret place at the boat.

On inquiry by the inspectors, a crew member of the boat reported that it was sea salt which later proved that this information was incorrect and it was a narcotic substance.

The seized material containing 13 pieces of hashish. A recording of the incident was made and passengers and seized material was sent to the concerned authorities.

Abdul Hadi Al Sahli, Director of the Maritime Customs Department at the Authority, praised the efficiency and experience of the customs officers. He pointed out that the Al Ruwais Port witnessed a number of major seizures during the past period, especially after it was adopted as an outlet for importing commercial goods since the siege was imposed.

It should be noted that the General Authority of Customs has recently developed systems of examination at a number of entry points and enhanced the capabilities of their staff to suspect and read the body language of passengers. It also conducted training courses at the highest levels for its officers and that will increase the number of seizures.
