Quweira, April 26 (Petra)--Prime Minister Hani Al Mulki on Thursday, launched in Quweira District in the southern Aqaba Governorate, the Quwerah solar run power plant, the largest photovoltaic power station in the Kingdom.
The $120 million project, with a capacity of 103 MW, was financed through a grant by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).
Al Mulki, accompanied by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh, the chief commissioner of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) Nasser Shraideh, Aqaba Governor Hijazi Assaf and Director of Operation at ADFD Adel Al Hosani, toured facilities of the of the power station that will produce electricity sufficient for 51 housing units.
In remarks during the ceremony, the minister of energy said that the energy sector used to place a major burden on the national economy, pointing out that the government has developed a comprehensive strategy for the energy sector, which included a set of measures to reduce the energy bill and rely on local energy resources.
This project, he said, is added to other projects that currently generate about 700 MW and contributes to 8 percent of the available electricity energy. He pointed out that the contracted projects, which will be operational by 2020, will have a capacity of 2000 megawatts, providing 20 percent of the total electricity that Jordan needs in 2020.
The minister pointed out that most of the renewable energy projects in Jordan are investments of the private sector valued at $2 billion, noting that the project is implemented through a generous grant from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development as part of the contribution of the United Arab Emirates to the Gulf grant to Jordan.
The Director of Operations at ADFD highlighted the strong ties between Jordan and the UAE, noting that the fund has accomplished 31 projects in the Kingdom over the past years that contributed to achieving sustainable development.
