Europe top human rights body urges Cyprus police to tackle prisoners abuse


(MENAFN) Cyprus police ought to effectively handle the issue of abusive treatment towards prisons, Europe's major human rights body urged after "credible allegations" surfaced against officers physically beating detainees.

Officers were accused of physically abusing prisoners, with foreigners them, through slapping, punching and kicking them.

Police officers must scolded and pushed to comprehend how such acts are considered as a crime of which they will be put on trial for, as noted in a report released by the Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment (CPT).

The human rights body further called for a new psychiatric hospital to be established, since the current hospital is "substantially below standard."
