Qatar- MoPH to organise workshop on autism

Doha: The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) will organise workshop on ‘Communicating with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Individuals' next week to increase awareness and enhance partnerships.

The workshop will be held between April 29 and May 1 at Katara Cultural Village.

The workshop aims to raise families and healthcare providers' awareness of ASD and to enhance communication between families and healthcare providers to find unique partnerships to sponsor people with autism.

A number of entities will participate in the workshop including Qatar Autism Center, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Primary Health Care Corporation(PHCC), Sidra Medicine, Ministry of Transport and Communication's Mada Assistive Technology Center, Hamad Bin Khalifa University's Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs, in addition to participants from Oman and Kuwait.

Dr Nouf Mohammed Al Siddiqi, focal point at the Ministry of Public Health in the National Autism Plan and head of the ASD Communication Approach Workshop's organising committee, said that a group of specialists from different state entities and Kuwait Autism Society will be giving presentations in the workshop.

'We seek to exchange expertise and data in ASD field, introduce the latest services and the health practices developed to help ASD individuals, enhance cooperation and communication between families and healthcare providers to develop projects aim to serve the ASD individuals and their families, said Dr Al Siddiqi.

The workshop will discuss a number of key topics including early identification of ASD children, parenting ASD children, early intervention by HMC and Shafallah for Special Needs, the role of primary healthcare centers in offering the services needed by ASD individuals, and functional behavioral assessment for communicating with ASD individuals and enabling them to live independently.

In addition, the workshop will discuss the challenges families face during all age stages and the ways of overcoming them, dealing with ASD individuals in different school stages and helping them with their psychological problems and sleep disorders.

The workshop will include two applied workshops with the families of ASD individuals on occupational therapy and using assistive technology to support independent living program for ASD. A research study on the number of people with ASD in Qatar will be presented in the workshop.

The workshop comes within the framework of implementing the National Autism Plan 2017-2021, through which state competent entities seek to improve the lives of ASD individuals and their families in Qatar.
