DUBAI, 25th April, 2018 (WAM) -- The Applied Sustainability and Renewable Energy Department and the General Maintenance Department of Dubai Municipality, DM, replaced the traditional lamps installed in three mosques in the emirate with the energy efficient Dubai Lamps.

A total of 1,600 lamps were changed in Satwa Grand Mosque located in Al Bidaa area, Fatima Al Zarouni Mosque in Hor Al Anz East, and Zaid Bin Haritha Mosque in Rashidiya.

The move was based on the MoU signed between DM and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities, IACAD, in April 2017 to replace traditional lamps in selected mosques of the Emirate of Dubai with Dubai Lamps in order to save energy and spread a culture of sustainability.

It is also part of the civic body's efforts to build strategic partnerships through which it seeks to implement sustainable initiatives and projects in the Emirate of Dubai.

Dawood Al Hajiri, Director General of DM, pointed out the importance of establishing partnerships between government agencies to implement pioneering projects in the fields of sustainability and renewable energy, which in turn ensures Dubai's vision of becoming the smartest and most sustainable city by 2021.

He said Dubai Lamp project is one of the Future Accelerator outputs of Dubai Municipality as it is one of the most efficient lamps in the world, which helps to achieve an integrated, innovative and sustainable vision, and it is also the first of its kind in the world and is in line with the strategies and objectives of the country in the field of sustainable development.

Al Hajiri said that the Municipality had signed 11 such agreements including the one signed with the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department, and the amount donated to the mosques for Dubai Lamps is an affirmation of the vision of Dubai Municipality towards a sustainable future.

He stressed that this initiative reflects the interest of Dubai Municipality in implementing the concept of energy saving in all mosques in Dubai and transforming them into more sustainable mosques.

Dr. Hamad Bin Al Sheikh Ahmed Al Shaibani, Director General of IACAD, said, "The rationalisation of resource consumption is a behavior encouraged by our Islamic Sharia, which is mentioned in the texts of the Holy Quran and Sunnah and the Department has made great strides in applying it in the mosques of Dubai.

He said that in this phase, the Department has carried out changes in three mosques, as a model application, which will be monitored and evaluated to reduce waste of energy. "In the later phases, we will implement this in all the existing mosques in the emirate, and those that are under construction. In order to achieve full success in the project, the Municipality has been provided with all data regarding the number of mosques, their locations, areas and average consumption of electricity," said Al Shaibani.

"This is the beginning of a joint contribution between the two sides in spreading the culture of saving electricity consumption and investment in the field of energy to motivate the community to rationalize and achieve an urban boom in light of the provisions of our religion and the guidance of our government in the finest ways and methods of internationally approved standards," he said.
