Political meddling in cricket affairs unacceptable: Ghani

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani, conferring the Ghazi Mohammad Ayub Khan medal on the national team, says political interference in board affairs is unacceptable.

Ghani granted medals and cash awards to the cricketers in recognition of their outstanding performances during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace late on Tuesday night.

Skipper Ashgar Stanikzai thanked the president for his continued attention to encouragement and appreciation of the achievements and success of the team.

Asadullah Ghazanfar, the presidential advisor on cultural affairs, read out Ghani€™s decree awarding medals and cash prizes to the team.

Addressing the players, Ghani said: €œYou are the real ambassadors of the country. Everyone is proud of you.€

He added: €œYou represent a country known for war death and destruction. But you have added the word life to it €¦ everyone is proud of you.€

The Afghan cricket squad had set a good example for others to emulate, the president remarked, noting its meteoric rise at the international level despite odds.

Ghani congratulated the team on finding its way to the 2019 World Cup. He hoped the Afghans would continue to rise, and no political interference in team affairs would be brooked.
