Delhi: Construction of 1,797 unauthorized colonies stayed by SC
24 Apr 2018

"Unauthorized colonies can't be placed in a better position than authorized ones," said Supreme Court today while imposing a stay on construction of 1,797 unauthorized colonies in Delhi.

Additionally, SC asked Centre to form a special task force to remove encroachments from public land.

The bench refused to pay heed to DDA's appeal to remove the stay on amendments made to the city's master-plan.

The bench comprising Justices Madan B. Lokur and Deepak Gupta further said that if any construction in these unauthorized colonies is not done as per by-laws, action should be taken.

SC said not following municipal laws puts a strain on civic bodies, agreeing with senior advocate Ranjit Kumar, who's helping the court in hearing petitions on sealing of unauthorized constructions.

SC had lashed out for failing to curb unauthorized colonies
Early on this month

DDA was also asked to give details of the 27.02acre it reclaimed since April 1 this year.

On April 4, SC had reprimanded the Centre, Delhi Government, DDA and MCDs for failing to curb mushrooming unauthorized colonies due to their lackadaisical attitude.

The court was hearing about Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act, 2006 and subsequent legislation, which protect unauthorized construction from being sealed.
